Solo Trumpet with Orchestra

American Nomad

A crossover concerto by Emmy award-winning
composer Steve Heitzeg.

Commissioned by Paul Grangaard and written for Lazarus, the three-movement, 22-minute work takes audiences on a sonic cross-country journey from the streets of New York City to the expanse of the California coast, evoking musical voices ranging from Bernstein and Gershwin to Gil Evans and Miles Davis with a strong element of jazz improvisation - including a plunger mute tribute to rock star Gram Parsons.

As one critic says, "American Nomad is that relatively rare hybrid that gives both the orchestra and the soloist something meaningful to do.”
